Shichimi Togarashi
Shichimi Togarashi
About: Shichimi Togarashi is a premium spice blend prevalent in Japanese cuisine traditionally used to flavor soups, noodle dishes, seafood, and grilled meats. Shichimi Togarashi delivers a balanced heat, flavor, and beautiful color to elevate dishes.
One of Tokyo’s now-famous herb shops, Yagenbori, in 1965 during the Edo period, first created Shichimi Togarashi. Its name is derived from the Japanese word Shichi meaning “seven” and Togarashi meaning “peppers”, referring to the number of spices typically used in this blend.
This magical blend was first sold in pharmacies for its medicinal properties. It was street vendors who then began selling it as a seasoning. Its popularity skyrocketed, quickly becoming the bestselling seasoning at neighborhood festivals. Traditionally, Shichimi Togarashi is used to season noodles and hotpots and to top chicken skewers, beef, tempura, and other fried foods. Shichimi Togarashi is a versatile, multi-use seasoning that will enhance dishes and tickle the taste buds.
