This vintage blend is the brainchild of a German refugee originating off the Maryland coast of Chesapeake Bay. Fishmongers were originally hesitant to try a seasoning blend that wasn’t their own, believing theirs to be superior. However, once the first merchant saw his business increase after using the blend, the blend rapidly grew in popularity.
Today, this blend is as ubiquitous to New England as TexMex is to Texas, an icon of the state. Although its original intention was to season seafood from the Chesapeake Bay, it has evolved into a seasoning versatile enough to season a wide variety of dishes from popcorn to chicken to pizza to French Fries. And amazingly, in Maryland specifically, this classic spice blend has found its way into both beer and ice cream.
